Obituary: John Baer or this community, passed out of this life to his hong home Thursday evening, December 8, at 7:30 o'clock. He was born at Biergenhoff, Baden in Germany, on the 3rd day of April 1841, and died in his home near Clay Center, Kansas, on December 8, 1927, at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 5 days. He was united in marriage to Babetta Herr in 1868. This union was blessed with 12 children, 6 of them having preceded the father in death, and Mrs. Baer passed to her reward in 1899. Mr. Baer was confirmed in the Fatherland, in the Mennonite church, and was a member of that church when he arrived in this country with his family in 1881. He first lived in the Ebenezer neighborhood a few years, later moving to a farm north west of Clay Center, and lived in this community until his death. The Lord prospered him in earthly goods, but in this he did not forget this God. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church during the ministry of Rev. H. Menger on the 28th of July 1889. He was a faithful member, always ready to help any good cause in the church or out of the church. He was expecially a friend to the poor. He was an upright man, a good citizen, friend and neighbor.
On the 15th of September, 1915, he was again united in marriage, this time to Miss Lidia Hodel. This union was also a very happy one. He was a loving husband and father, and passed away after a long illness, in which as it seemed he went through intense suffering at times. His wife and other relatives did all for him that love and kindness could do. May Heaven reward. He went into a deep sleep ten days before he passed away, from which he never awoke. He left a pleasant memory and a good Christian record.
"They are not dead who leave behind, rich legacies of heart and mind. These are not dead--Think not life's race is run For them--beyond the bourne--Life has new begun.
Those surviving him are his devoted wife, three sons, Rudolph Baer of Strathmore, Calif., Christ Baer of Pampa, Texas, and Henry Baer of Clifton, Kans.; three daughters, Lena Kretzmeyer of Clay Center, Barbare Hege of Aberdine, Idaho and Lizzie Kretzmeyer of Manhattan, Kansas; twenty-seven grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
The funeral services were held from the Sixth street Methodist church Sunday afternoon. The services were in charge of Rev. A.P. Baecker, his pastor who was assisted by Rev. Wm. Pommerenke. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery. The music was funished by a mixed quartet of Clay Center and the male quartet of Ebenezer.
