  Obituary:
Heer:--Jacob Heer was born August 13, 1844 in Wurzburg, Germany, the son of Peter and Magdalena Heer, departed this life Apr 2, 1926 aged 81 years, 7 months and 20 days. At the age of twenty-five he came to America and settled in Clay county, taking up a homestead in Highland township.
Two years later, August 13, 1871, he was married to Elizabeth Bachmann, also from Germany. They were the first white married settlers in Highland township. Their homestead was the same section of land on which the Ebenezer church now stands. Here they established their early pioneer life. To hear of the drought, of times of sickness, we are made to realize that it took a measure of courage and endurance of which this generation knows but little.
After several years of this life, Father Heer realized his need of a Savior and in 1876 was converted and baptised uniting with the Brethren in Christ church.
Into this Christian home were born ten children, six of whom are living. The richest heritage any family can have is the memory of godly parents. How faithfully he taught his children the ways of the Lord, and what earnest prayers they may always remember as coming from a loving father in their behalf. He also loved the church and gave of his best service both as a deacon and later as a minister.
Because of the inconvenience of living so far from the church, in which they worshipped, he secured property in Hayes township, where he moved his family, and in which community their home has been ever since. The years brought many changes to their home life here; times of sadness when death entered the home circle; times of rejoicing when one after another of their children gave their hearts to the Lord.
In his declining years his greatest pleasure was to go to church on Sunday morning, where although he understood but little of the English service, he worshipped God from his heart. Those who visited in the Heer home found a ready word of praise to God. Whenever he was able to get to prayer meeting his testimony was of praise of a home prepared for them in Heaven. How blessed are these memories as we lay the earthly body away to await the resurrection.
He leaves to mourn, his faithful and beloved companion and the following children: Mrs. George Mauch, Clay Center; Dan Heer, Manhattan Kans.; Phillip, John, Chris and Jacob, all near Green, Kansas, who faithfully ministered to him in his nine weeks of illness. Twenty grand children and seven great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, April 5, at 2 o'clock at the Brethren of Christ church, 5 1/2 miles northwest of Green. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church. The services were conducted by Rev. John M. Sheets of Detroit, Kansas, assisted by Elder T. Wm. A. Smith. The text used was Timothy 4:6-8. Several beautiful appropriate hymns were sung by six young folks from the German Methodist church. The pallbearers were the five sons and one son-in-law.
