Susan's birthplace is listed as North Carolina. She is listed as age 20 and living with Samuel Coleman and Rhoda A. Coleman (age 1) State Census for Yell Township, Boone County, Iowa, in 1856: Samuel Coleman is 24, Susan J. M. Coleman is 26, Rotha E. is 7 (female), John W. is 5, Martha J. is 2. Columne 15: militia is 1, Samuel is a farmer, he is owner of land. Acres of unimproved land: 157. Acres of corn: 20. Bushels harvested: 1000.. Acres of potatoes: 1/2. Bushels harvested: 85. Number of hogs sold: 30. Value of hogs sold: 240 (hard to read). Nmber of cattle sold: 2. Value of cattle sold: 30. Pounds of butter manufactured: 100. Resident Centerville. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1860 US Census in Boonestown, Yell Township, July 27, 1860 finds Samuel and Susan Coleman with 5 children and Nelson Combs (age 42) Living next door to them are Wilkins and Rhoda Taylor (age 65 and 62) [Could these be Susan' parents or grandparents?]This Taylor family includes Eliza age 35 and George age 16. George and Wilkins are listed as farmers. Samuel's family includes John W. age 8, Martha J, age 6, Huldy M, age 3, and George W., age 1. Value of real estate and personal property is each 150. Skip 3 houses and we find the James Taylor family : James, 22, Lydia (Lidda) age 22, Mary C, age 4, Rhodisa R, age 2, and G.W. age 6/12. They are farmers from Indiana with the kids born in Iowa. Real Estate value 250 and personal property 75. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Next we find Susan Coleman in the 1880 (June) US Census taken in The unorganized territory, Holt, Nebraska (all territory south of Niobrara River, north of 7th standard paralell, between 2nd and 3rd guide Meridian. She is listed as head of house at age 50. Family includes her son, George W. age 21, a farmer born in Iowa, 14 year old Marian, a son born in Iowa, Francis V., a son born in Iowa, and Harvey V, age 8 born in Iow Next door we find Martha J. (Coleman) age 25 living with her husband Mathias Huffman (Hoffman) age 29, and sons Ralph age 3 and Walter M. age 9/12, Sons were born in Iowa as was Mathias. 3 doors down we find Rhoda A (Coleman) ,age 31, living with her husband (age 30), and 5 children. Both adults born in Indiana and children born in Iowa. 4 doors from this family we find Henry S. Huffman age 26, a farmer, and wife Celia C. age 23, both from Iowa, and their baby Norman S., age 9/12 (Sept. birth) born in Nebraska. Also living with them is Charles A.L. Huffman age 19 and a farmer, who is Henry's brother. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1900 US census taken in Valentine, Cherry County, Nebraska finds Susan J. Coleman, age 68, living with her son Marian as head of the house and his wife Nancy S. ages 33 and 31. Also in the home are Marian's daughter Huldah age 12, and two sons George and Clarence ages 11 and 8. They are living on Lodi street or village. 1900 Census - Son John says his mother was born in South Carolina. And his dad in Indiana. ---------------------------------------- "Samuel and Susan moved to Illinois and Iowa before coming to Nebraska in 1883 and settling in Holt County." Samuel & Susan split and Susan with her unmarried children settled in cherry county by the 1890's. Samuel stayed in Iowa (one story says with his daughter Adaline and another story says with the Levi Overman family). Samuel died July 13, 1896 and is buried in Boone Co., Iowa. Susan died on May 12, 1916 due to a Diphtheria epidemic. A private funeral was held and she was buried at Kilgore, Nebraska. [In Nebraska I found that Laura Adelia Hoffman (Rhoda Coleman Hoffman's daughter) married a Reuben Allen Overman in 1890 in Valentine] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Susan Coleman - Rest in Peace wonderful lady!
