a. Note:   When in New York he worked with Hansome Cabs in the city. At the end of the work day, he sometimes sent a cab to take his children for a ride, much to their delight. With the advent of the automobile, the horse drawn cab business declined. After contacting an O'Donoghue relative in Chicago to inquire about work there, he moved the family to Illinois.
 According to family history stories, Ethel celebrated her 5th birthday on the train trip from New York to Chicago. .
