a. Note:   ming a student at Covenant Theological Seminary near Stockholm. Nils's father was a sailor and went to America in the 1870's, after which he was never heard from again.
 His mother died when he was ten years old, Nels lived with an aunt for some time and was able to go to school. In April, 1874, he journeyed to Stockholm where he signed on a Norwegian ship loading lumber cargo for Spain. He eventually landed in Canada from where he got to New York. He worked in New York on Wall Street as an errand boy but when heard about a ship sailing for California around the cape, he signed on. In California he worked as a coachman for a wealthy family and as a blacksmith at times. After attending church for time he decided to become a minister, to which end he was helped by a man in Illinois who sent back to Sweden to study. He was twenty three at this time, and after some study he began to preach in Smaland where he was very successful. He was recommended for the Pastor's position in the Swedish Covenant Church in Oakland, Ca., by the head of the Covenant theological Seminary, Dr. Ekman, and so was set his return to America and hes entrance by way of Ellis Island, 1887.
 He returned to San Francisco and served the Swedish Church of Oakland as well as several churches on the west coast and in the midwest. Nels met his wife, Albertina Johanson, when both were member of the Se wish Mission church in San Francisco. Both Nils and Albertina came to the United States the 1880's. Nils became the pioneer pastor on the west coast in the Evangelical Covenant Church.
