Notes
a. Note:   The family of Hilma E. Gustafson was enumerated on the 1910 Federal census in Carlton village of Carlton County. It consisted of Hilma E., age 32, as widowed head of the family, sons Carl R., 13, and Rhubian [sic? initial illegible], nine, and daughters Edith G., five, and Martha E., three. Hilma had borne six children, of whom five were living at the time of the census. She had been born in Sweden (immigrating in 1884), and all of the children in Minnesota of Swedish parentage. She worked in the laundry trade, "at home," and owned their house free and clear.
  ----------
Carlton County Vidette, 29 October 1936:
"Atkinson Lady Died Yesterday. Mrs. Axel Larson Gave Up the Struggle After Illness. Funeral Will Be Sunday. A Patient Sufferer, and Another Victim of Dread Scourge, Cancer.
Death claimed another of the substantial women of Carlton county Wednesday morning about 2:45, when Mrs. Axel Larson of Atkinson gave up the struggle after a brave fight for life for several months from the dread scourge, cancer, of the spine and which spread internally to other vital organs. She had taken treatments at a Duluth hospital and undergone one exploratory operation and another one later to try and get some relief. The best of surgical skill could not save her life.
Evelina [sic] Larson, which was her maiden name, was born at Malun Dallarne [sic], Sweden, on July 14, 1877, thus being aged about 58 years. She was a daughter of the late August Larson, who lived for many years in Carlton, and who died here some years ago, a fine, well respected gentleman. His wife also died here several years previously. Eveline [sic] was first married to Andrew Gustafson, who died in 1906 [sic]. She married Axel Larson on Nov. 10, 1910, at Carlton. Rev. Peterson performed the ceremony.
Her sons and daughters by her first and second marriages are as follows. Eva, now Mrs. Dave Baldwin of Hibbing; a son, Reuben Gustafson, Virginia, Minn.; Edith Gustafson, now Mrs. Ted Nelson of Chicago; Martha, now Mrs. Leonard Ernst of Morgan Park, Duluth; Gertrude, now Mrs. Chester Erickson of Sawyer; three sons, Edward, Delmar and Milton Larson, who reside at the parental home. There are also nine grandchildren. Her husband, Axel, who has done everything possible for her relief, also survives her. Other sisters have passed on ahead of her.
Mrs. Larson was connected with the Swedish Lutheran church, and the funeral will be held from that church at Atkinson next Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Rev. F. M. Eckman officiating. Mrs. Larson was also a member of the Royal Neighbors fraternal society. For some years that order maintained a chapter at Atkinson, but later it merged with Cloquet, and she was a regular attendant over there when in good health. She was known as a very kind neighborly woman, who made and retained many warm friends. And all of these and all of the other hudnreds of friends of her children are a unit in expressing their regrets at the loss of her, and sympathy to the bereaved, loyal husband, and the sons and daughters in their sad loss."
