NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICS SOCIETY;THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR; Page 136; sent to me by Betty CATHCART; NOTE: The Battle near Monmouth Courthouse; George COFER participated in this engagement. Lead by General Charles LEE intercepted by General George WASHINGTON. This is where Mary HAYES who carried water for the wounded and weary soldiers, picked up the ramrod as her husband fainted of exhaustion and commenced firing the cannon. Mary HAYES and other helpful water bearers were dubbed "Molly Pitcher". The Battle at Stoney Point was another engagement that our George COFER participated in. General Anthony WAYNE was in command of this battle and on 15 July 1779 wrote "near the hour and scene of carnage" he expected to die in this battle asking a friedn to care for his children. They left at midnight to march, all 1,200 men in all. His two columns moved silently through the marsh, branched out, then moved into Stoney Point defenses. As the surprised British began to fire. American axemen chopped away at the abatis(a barricade of felled trees with branches facing the enemy) and special volunteers dashed past the obstructions. Then a whole cataract of men flowed past the barricades and into the dark battle. British fired muskets, Americans were prepared to use only bayonets. The American price was 15 dead, 80 wounded; the British had 20 killed, 74 wounded, 58 missing and 472 captured. !MILITARY-WARRANT: May 1783 receivied military land warrant for 200 acres in KY in 1783 moved to KY in 1789. !TAX-LIST: from Gar PILLIAR Mar 2000: 1787; Montgomery Co KY Account of Sale of Jeremiah EARLY, de'ced recorded 17 Dec 1878. George was the son of Thomas COFER...My ancestor was a Rhoda COFER\COFFER who married Stephen HAM in 1782. I think she was a neice of George's. She and her husband moved to Madison Co KY as did several of her Uncle's. I have not identified which brother was her uncle. Most of the COFER brothers were involved in the Rev War in some way. Jesse was a Capt in the KY Militia and married one of the BOONE girls. I have Thomas' Will and Abstracts of lots of deeds that mention him. He was a farmer and merchant. ...Rhoda died before 1814 and most of the brothers died after that. ...The COFERS and HAMS were on my Father's side..my parents came from BUTLER Co MO....mentions ZOLLICOFER theory. !FAMILYHISTORY: Correspondence from Betty I SILFIES 3023 Livingston St Allentown PA 18104; 610-434-3831; E-mail CVCC 06 @prodigy.com; dated 8 Dec 1996; NOTE: ...Ancestral File Family ver 4.15; AFN: R529-SP; George COFER b abt 1752; Penciled in ..Bourbon Co KY 1795; Bourbon Co KY 1820; last paid tax in Bath Co KY 1817; was in Bath Co KY; then in St Francois Co (another spot say Ste Genevieve Co) MO 1830. !FAMILYHISTORY: Correspondence from Betty I SILFIES 3023 Livingston St Allentown PA 18104; 610-434-3831; E-mail CVCC 06 @prodigy.com; dated 8 Dec 1996; NOTE: ...Included in Betty's papers is a letter from Mary Cofer GENTRY 3609 Patterson Dr Amarillo TX 79109; dated 23 Sep 1971; addressed to KY Historical Society Old State House Frankfort KY 40601; QUOTE: I am trying to trace one of my ancestors by the name of George COFER (COFFER or COPHER). He was a Revolutionary soldier who went to KY in 1789, and from there went to Ste Genevieve Co MO in 1819. He was the son of Thomas COFER of Culpepper Co VA and was born 9-1-1757. He died in MO 1837. His brother's names were Thomas, Josias, James, Joseph, Jesse, Jacob, Joel, Reuben, and Joseph. His sisters were Sarah, Anna GIBSON (Henry W.) Elizabeth and Phoebe. I believe that George, Jesse, Joel, and Reuben all went to KY.
