John Mitchell, born 1795, came to Tennessee from North Carolina between 1800 & 1816. He married Elizabeth ? in 1816 in Tennessee.
One child was born in Tenn. in 1832--Marion County?TN
John Mitchell and family came to Rusk Co., Texas probably early to middle 1850's. We come to this conclusion because records indicate John Mitchell Sr. received a land grant in Rusk Co., Texas in 1854. Also records show John Sr. purchased 230 acres of land from G.W. Blunt and wife, Sept 26, 1855 for the price of $1000.00, Deed Book J, page 305. Also, three of his children were married in Rusk Co., TX in the 1850's, John Jr--1856, James-- 1857 and Rebecca--1859.
On May 2, 1859, John Mitchell Sr. and wife Elizabeth sold this 230 acres of land to N.C. Holloway, Deed Bk O, page 35 and to S.W. March, Deed Bk Q, page 484.
On the 1860 Texas Census, John Sr and James H. Mitchell were living next door to each other in James Town Beat, Smith County, Texas.
The 1860 James Town Beat, Smith Co. Texas Census shows John Mitchell to be a Baptist Minister.
Must have moved back to Rusk Co., Texas in early 1860's, maybe after James H. was killed in Civil War. Frances E. Hale (Mitchell) married A.C. Whittemore, June 16, 1864 in Rusk Co., Texas. She and Augustus C. Whittemore had a son Clem Whittemore in 1865 in Rusk Co., TX.
John Sr and Elizabeth were on the 1870 Rusk, Co., TX census with the sons of James H. and Frances Hale, John W and James M. Mitchell. Frances must have died sometime between 1865 and 1870 in Rusk Co., Texas and the sons went to live with their grandparents. John Sr. and J.M. Mitchell were on the 1880 Gregg Co., Texas Census living with John Sr's daughter Fancina Mitchell (Smith). John Sr died sometime after the 1880 Census.
Gregg County was formed in 1873 from parts of Upshur and Smith Co.,. Most probably the families didn't move, but were living in the part of Rusk County that was taken into Gregg County.
John Mitchell Jr. remained in Rusk Co. when his father and brother moved to Smith Co.. He was married to Susan Jane Gee in 1856, Rusk Co. TX. They were on the 1860 & 1870 Rusk Co. and 1880 & 1900 Gregg Co. Census. John Jr died in 1907 and Susan died in 1917 in Gregg Co., TX. They are buried in Winterfield Cemetery, Tyron Rd., Longview, in Gregg Co., TX.
No records have been found as yet for the burial places of John Sr.& Elizabeth or Frances E. Hale- Mitchell-Whittemore.
