a. Note:   Came to Oswego County about 1829. Died while visiting his brother in Patterson, New Jersey, and is buried there. Family folklore says that he went to California for the Gold Rush; he was gone so long without being heard from, that his wife remarried and had another child. Upon his return she had to choose which husband. Neither William nor his sons George and Aaron were home for the 1850 census. But Susan Benson was 55 in 1850, too old to be having children. Bought his first property in Oswego County in Parish in 1834.
  Cause of death: billious fever.
