A book about the Niles Center Volunteer Fire Company talks about "Jacob Franz, one of the original fire company volunteers, came in 1869 from Berkenfeld, Germany, aged 18, with his father, John Theobald, also a tailor." A check in Robert Morsdorf's 'Auswanderung aus dem Birkenfelder Land,' shows that Jacob Franz who left in 1888 came from the town of Bosen. A family book for the town of Bosen lists the Franz family, and the marriage in 1838 of Jacob Franz to Catherine Saar is recorded in the civil registration for the locality. His marriage record says that he is a bricklayer, the son of Peter Franz and Elisabetha Thomas.
