 ADOLPH GJERDING
 May 27, 1912 - March 21, 2010
Born May 27, 1912 to Iver and Ingeborg Gjerding on a farm near Litchville, N.D. He was the fifth of nine siblings, and the
second-born after his parents emigrated from Norway in 1908. He came
to Seattle in 1936 after an especially poor year of farming. Even
though the Depression was in full swing, he was able to find work
right away and worked steadily until he retired in 1977.
He married Olga Marie Hartman at the Salem Evangelical Free Church in Ballard in 1940. They had one son, Bradley Keith, in 1943. Marie
died in 1995. He married Bergitte Asko Boe in 1996 (they had first
dated in 1938). Bergitte died in 2003.
The most important relationship in his life was his relationship with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and from his early years as a
child until the last of his life he found fellowship and support in
the church community and daily scripture reading.
Adolph moved to an apartment at Crista in 2004, later to Assisted Living. He moved to Columbia Lutheran Home in September 2008. He
passed away March 21, 2010. He is survived by his son Brad Gjerding
(Kay Riegel) and siblings Cora Barthold, Hazel Nesland, and Ivan
 Gjerding.

e. Note:   Conversations with Adolph: his marriage exempted him from the draft in WWII.
f. Note:   Pastor Douglas Lindsay performed the ceremony. Adolph and Bergitte first met each other in 1938 in Seattle. They dated for about 8 months
until Bergitte's departure in the spring of 1939 for a visit to
Norway. Adolph proposed marriage before she left, but Bergitte did not
want to be an "engaged girl" during her visit (which was cut short by
the 01 SEP 1939 start of WWII in Europe). She quickly returned to
America, stopping in New York City. By the time she returned to
Seattle (in the summer of 1940), she learned that her relationship
with Adolph had changed (he was about to marry another woman on 07 SEP
1940). As she spoke of it later, this discovery "closed that chapter
of her life." She put away her picture album displaying photos of
Adolph and did not speak of him until their courtship resumed 56 years
later, about six months after the death of Adolph's first wife (02 AUG
 1995).
