John McCartney and wife, Mary Ann, of Flint, Genesee County sold to Samuel Wilson, of Barr, Vermont, for $160, a parcel of 160 acres, SW quarter of Sec. 21 Twp. 10 Range 9, (Watertown) Tuscola County. This Indenture originally made 15 Nov 1851 in Genesee County and recorded in Tuscola County of 1 July 1863. Witnesses: H. Elevrely, John A. Hutton, Notary Public, Genesee Co. (Liber 9 p.59; have copy of deed). Have checked Genesee Co. marriage and birth records, but found nothing for a John and Mary Ann. There was a John McCartney who, in 1854, purchased 40 acres through the Bureau of Land Management's Genesee office. Will order this document for identity of location of property. Was out of work two months during the census year. 24 March 1884 Deed: Nelson and Susan C. Holland of Buffalo, Erie Co., NY, received from John M. McCartney of Marlette, Sanilac Co, $200 for piece of property containing 40 acres located in the south half of the south half of the north east quarter of section 36 in township 11 north of range 11 east (Koylton). McCartney will "Warrant and defend except as to taxes or incumbrances since the 25th day of Feb 1880". Witnesses: Levi S. Gates, Notary Public and Wm. M. Thompson. Recorded at Erie Co, NY 24 March 1884. Recorded at Tuscola Co. 6 May 1884 (Liber 57 p.494. Have copy). 1884John and Jane, of Koylton, for $250, from Jesse B. Atwood, of Genesee County, 40 acres of land located in Koylton Twp., (Tuscola Co.) the South half of the South half of the North East quarter of section 36 in twp. 11 North of range 11 East. This mortgage was for a term of five years. (Liber 43, p.638). 15 July 1889 Above property was sold at Sheriff's sale to Emily Atwood for non-payment of mortgage. (Liber ?, p.242-243). 1897Residing in Wilmot, North of Kingston, according to marriage record of daughter, Maud. 14 June 1900Federal census states both John and Jane immigrated in 1861 and have been in the US for 39 years. Naturalized citizen. John was a blacksmith and freely owned his home. State both parents born Mass. 25 April 1910:Federal census, Kingston, Tuscola states John married twice, present marriage having lasted 38 years. States both parents born in Mass. Immigrated in 1863. He was a self-employed blacksmith, could read and write and freely owned his home. 1919 Blacksmith; Owns land & house in Wilmot on Twp. Road 25 (The Farm Journal). 17 Dec 1919 Death record states he was residing in Brookfield (home of his daughter, Mrs. James McLellan) and was a widower. Occupation: farmer. It does not state where he was buried. 7 January 1920 Census, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI for Robert & Bertha (McCartney) and Marshal McCartney state "father born in New York.
