Correspondence with Diane TIERNEY, November 1987:
"Grandma (Bertha) was born in Battle Creek. I think Grandma Goodrich took her to New York where they lived until 1910. My father (Sheldon HARMON) was three months old when Homer, Bertha, Goodrich and he came back to Michigan (June 1910). When Bertha was a very little girl, her mother left her with the Goodrich family. Bertha's mother left Harley and Harold with other people. When the Goodrich family heard Abbot was coming back to town to get Bertha (who at that time couldn't even remember her mother) they moved to Buffalo, New York. Bertha was 17 before she found out Nettie (who was called Ett) wasn't her mother.

  April 1988: (Diane Tierney)
We think her parents were divorced when Grandma was very young. No one knows what happened to her father, but her mother showed up from time to time. When I was about ten years old, Grandma went to Livingston, Montana to see her mother. Her mother had remarried and his name was O'Brien. She died and is buried in Montana. Uncle Homer said Grandma was left with the Goodrichs', one of the boys (Harley) was left with someone else (Florence McCallum - 1900 census for Battle Creek) and Grandma's mother kept one of the boys (Harold) with her. Harold was a career soldier in the Cavalry and Harley was an inventor. Uncle Homer knew them both because they ended up in Michigan."
