Note: N97 He thought he would go to sea and bring home oranges, nuts, etc. as did his cousins, the Wards. On his second voyage, he was taken sick with the yellow fever. A commemorative funeral service was held in the Congregational Church in West Haven. The following is a copy of Capt Bryan's statement. "Jesse Miner Stevens died February 22, 1844 of yellow fever in Cuba. He was buried near the point on the south side of the harbor of Trinidad, near the custom house wharf, as indicated by a tomb board placed to his memory painted white with black let ers."
