John Lunn MacKAY was a journeyman cabinetmaker. After receiving a small inheritance from his adopted family (the Watsons) he purchased a coal business in Montreal and became a coal merchant. He originally wanted to buy a nickleodeon that was for sale but his wife Sarah, a staunch Presbyterian, thought it inappropriate.
The coal business ended in bankruptcy because during the depression John continued supplying coal to customers who could no longer pay. When conversion to oil heating came about he couldn't afford to make the transition.

Lovell's Montreal Directory of 1929-30, p. 609 lists his business address as 3768 Ontario East; the 1946 Directory gives his home address as 3832 Av. Girouard.
