The Ross and Watson families were related by marriage. Watson John age 44 b. Ontario merchant Watson Maud age 21 b. Ontario Watson Mary age 67 b. Scotland widow McKAY John age 7 b. Ontario 1901 census for Hawkesbury E, Prescott County, Ontario (Film #T6492): John is living in Hawkesbury Village with the senior Mary Watson. John Lunn MacKAY was a journeyman cabinetmaker. After receiving a small inheritance from his adopted family (the Watsons) he purchased a coal business in Montreal and became a coal merchant. He originally wanted to buy a nickleodeon that was for sale but his wife Sarah, a staunch Presbyterian, thought it inappropriate. The coal business ended in bankruptcy because during the depression John continued supplying coal to customers who could no longer pay. When conversion to oil heating came about he couldn't afford to make the transition. Lovell's Business Directory of Prov of Qu�bec lists on p. 413: Mackay Bros, wood & coal 187 Ontario W Lovell's Montreal Directory of 1929-30, p. 609 lists his business address as 3768 Ontario East; the 1946 Directory gives his home address as 3832 Av. Girouard.
