She passed away when he was ten years old. He then went. to live with his father and step-mother. He stayed with them until he was sixteen. He could not get along with his step-mother, so he left home. He spent some time with his older brother, James, and then went to live with an old lady at Poplar. Idaho. Mrs. Stauffer, who had what they called a road house or a place for travelers to stay over night. Dad loved to stay with Mother Stauffer. She treated him like a son. He was told he had a home there as long as he wanted to stay. I remember her very well. I stayed at her place many times, when I was a boy. Dad was taught the sawmill business by his father, and later became sawyer for his brother James. He spent several years at this trade. When I was about nine years old, he traded a team of horses and a new wagon for 320 acres of land at Antelope, Idaho, where we sent ten wonderful years. The next ten years was spent on a dry farm, where we lived in the winter time and attended school. Dad was kind and freehearted. Mother said that one time, when he and a friend were in the timber after wood, the weather became very cold. His friend did not have a coat and Dad v near him for fourteen years. We spent many hours together. I drove a truck for the Railroad and many times he would go with me on my trips to Los Angeles. He loved to ride and see the country. ---------------------------------------- (Historical notes: In 1890 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discontinued the practice of plural marriage - polygamy.
