William Fred Cox Sr., 88, passed away Thursday (Dec. 31, 1998) at Lee County Community Hospital in Pennington Gap, Va. A lifelong resident of Jonesville, Va., he was a retired school teacher and postmaster. He was a member of Jonesville First United Methodist Church and had been active in the American Legion, Lions Club and Preston Masonic Lodge No. 47 AF & AM of Jonesville, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Walter Roy Cox of Abingdon, Va. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Skeen Cox, Jonesville, Va.; a son, W.F. Cox Jr., and his wife, Bonnie, Jonesville, Va.; two daughters, Carolyn Burgess and her husband, Larry of Gray, and Marilyn Sweeney and her husband, Brian of Syosset, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Mary Beth (Cox) Baker and her husband, Grant, Sarah Cox, Eric Burgess and Michael Sweeney; three sisters, Ethel Orr, Columbia, Md., Winnie Elliott, Washington, D.C. and Mabel White, Scottsboro, Ala.; several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home, Jonesville, Va. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Jonesville First United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Gardens, Woodway, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jonesville First United Methodist Church Building Fund.
