Since Zachariah was born between 1766 and 1770 (estimated from ages listed in census), he should have appeared in personal property tax lists beginning no later than 1791. The appearance of Zachariah in Amherst in 1793 suggests that he lived in another county before 1793. This does not mean that Zachariah was not originally from Amherst County. Zachariah was not married until 1794. As a young, single man, he might have found work outside of the county of his birth, returning to Amherst County to marry and settle down, at least until he moved to Franklin County, Virginia.
Change the above statement as this 1790 tax list was found. He may have not been old enough (not yet 21) to have his own listing.

"Not all the Peters families in southwest Virginia in the time period of interest were German. A Peters family history book, "Descendants of Joseph Gideon Peters, Sr." was recently published by Lois (Peters) Sanders and Avis (Peters) Smith. This Peters family was from England. The line starts with Zachariah Peters who died in Franklin County, Virginia. Zachariah's son Joseph Gideon Peters, was born in Franklin County in 1810 and died in Lee County, Virginia in 1892."
