a. Note:   sick friend, fell from her horse, and drowned in the Jackson River. We have been able to verify this story with the coroner's inquest report dated 22 January 1794, which includes the following statement: "Phebe was accidently drowned occasioned by the horse whereon she rode rearing and plunging and throwing her into the water."
