Notes
a. Note:   Brian Ruppe wrote: "Sophia Ruppe was born in 1790 in Virginia. She died on 19 May 1855 in York County, South Carolina. From "The Broad River Notebook" 1992 issue, published by Broad River Basin Historical Society, under section titled "Random Death Notices", states: Sophia Howell, wife of Williamson Howell, (died) of Typhus Fever, May 1885, age 68. (The year of death must be in error because on the tombstone of Sophia Howell the death year is 1855). She was buried in Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cherokee County, South Carolina. Sophia (called Sophira in "Ruppe History") grew up in Surry County, North Carolina. When the family moved to Union County, South Carolina around 1815, they settled at a place called "Howell's Ferry". This was a ferry business for crossing the Broad River. Here she met Williamson Howell, presumably the son of the owner, and married him. Her family is listed as living in York County, which is just across the river from Union County. This used to be Union County, but Cherokee County was made from portions of York, Union and Spartanburg Counties."
