Note:   Publication: Herald-Journal (Spartanburg, South Carolina) Published: April 11, 1989 Headline: Gaffney Girl Dies After Crash A Gaffney girl injured in a weekend automobile accident that killed her mother died in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Sunday night. Mary Beth Olmstead, 9, died following the one-car accident, which occurred on S.C. Highway 18, about 3 miles south of Gaffney, authorities said. The girl's mother, Kay R. Creswell, 27, of 516 Stephenson St., Gaffney, was pronounced dead at about 10:15 p.m. after her car ran off the road and overturned about an hour earlier on Saturday. Another daughter in the accident, 8-year-old Bessie Rose Olmstead, was listed in stable condition last night in Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney.

Olmstead of Gaffney and the late Kay Ruppe Creswell, died April 9, 1989, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Spartanburg County, she was a fourth-grade student at Limestone Elementary School and a member of Cherokee Creek Baptist Church. Also surviving are a sister, Bessie Rose Olmstead of the home; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ruppe of Gaffney; maternal great-grandmother, Flossie Gertrude Ruppe of Gaffney; maternal great-grandfather, Tom Wise of Gaffney; paternal grandparents, William E. and Brenda J. Olmstead of Gaffney; paternal great-grandmother, Bessie Beaty of Spartanburg; paternal great-grandfather, Robert Spencer of Gaffney; and paternal great-grandmother, Katherine Spencer of Gaffney. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. today in Cherokee Creek Baptist Church Cemetery by Dr. Philip Broyles and the Rev. John B. Goforth. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
