  1853: John W. Dempsey, living in Fayette County, (West) Virginia, sold his portion of Charles Thompson's estate in 1853 to William R. Wood for $20.00 but it was not recorded in the courthouse until February 1854. [Source: Nelson County Deed Book, Book 14, Page 60]

  1853 June Term Fayette County, (West) Virginia "John W. Dempsey made application to establish a ferry near his house, at the foot of the Long Shoal on the Kanawha river, with use of the landings on both banks." [Source: "History of Fayette County" published 1926, pg. 189]
  1853 December Term Fayette County, (West) Virginia "Permission was granted to John W. Dempsey to establish a ferry across Kanawha river at the foot of the Long Shoal, and the court prescribed for said ferry a boat 40 feet long and 8 feet wide, to be attended with one hand. Rate of ferriage to be as follows: For every man and horse, 10 cents; every footman, 5 cents; evry mule, horse or jennet being led, 5 cents; every pleasure carriage drawn by one horse, 25 cents; every pleasure carriage drawn by two horses, 30 cents; every wagon drawn by two horses, 50 cents; every wagon drawn by three horses, 75 cents; wagon drawn by 4, 5 or 6 horses, $1.00; every score of hogs or sheep, 25 cents." W. Dempsey, therefore I am assuming that he died in Dec 1876 (this annotation by Cathy Meder-Dempsey)
  The following is from appraisal and bill of sale: Will Book 2 deceased abt. Feb 3 1877 J. W. Dempsey page 276 and 277 and 278 list a wife and heirs, no names. Will Book entry must be checked to confirm the date of death. I believe that it must be bef. 1877. This information came from a Dempsey researcher who scribbled notes while at the courthouse.
