The Air Force enlisted 41 of the new men and the Army took the others. All Air Force recruits were sent to Sampton Air Force Base, N.Y., while the Army recruits went to Ft. Jackson, S.C. Enlisting in the air force were (not all names repeated here).....Fred Roosevelt Dempsey, 18, Victor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rothwell Dempsey.... All the Air Force enlistees joined for four years each and all the Army enlistees joined for three years each except for Fletcher, who enlisted for two years. (in file)

Dempsey enlisted in the Air Force in 1954 and while serving in Germany met and married his wife, the former Josette Wildinger, daughter of Mrs. Marcelle Wildinger of Luxemberg (sic, Luxembourg). Following the tour in Germany, the family lived in Georgia where Dempsey was stationed for four and one-half years and this was followed by a four-year tour of duty in France. Since returning stateside, they have lived in Idaho. Dempsey, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred R. Dempsey of Victor, will leave Oct. 19 for a year's tour of duty in Thailand. Dempsey Jr., 38, of Lackland AFB, Tex., formerly of Victor, Fayette County, died Sunday in Texas. A spokesman for Wallace-Wallace Funeral Home, Ansted, said death was attributed to natural causes. He had been in the Air Force 21 years and while living in Victor, he attended Hopewell Baptist Church. Mr. Dempsey was a native of Jodie. Surviving: wife, Jasetta (sic, Josette); daughters, Cathy, Debbie (sic, Debby) and Marc (sic, son), all at home; sons, Michael and Andre', both at home; sisters, Mrs. Thelma Fitzwater of Boomer, Mrs. Lois Lee of Merritt Island, Fla., Mrs. Leona Mullins of Ansted; brothers, Doyle of Phoenix; Ariz., Leland and Lloyd, both of Ansted. The body is being returned to Wallace-Wallace Funeral Home, Ansted.

Fred's funeral was held on 24 May 1974 in Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Ansted, Fayette County, West Virginia, with military chaplain from Ohio officiating.
