Wayne Smith wrote in e-mail dated 19 August 2003: "In the book Amherst County in the Revolution, Landon Gowing is mentioned in the pension application of John Massey. Landon is listed as 87 years old, the application is dated 1853." [His source: Lenora Higginbotham Sweeny, Amherst County, Virginia In the Revolution: Including Extracts from the ""Lost Order Book"" 1773-1782, Southern Historical Press, 1998]
This new information suggests that Landon was born abt. 1766 and died after 1853.
On 8 Sep 2007 I located the Revolutionary War papers of John Massey, husband of Susannah Wright. In these papers Landon S. Gowing gives affidavit that children named are children of John Massey, deceased, who was a Cornett in the United States service in the Revolutionary War. I do not see Landon's age listed. (in file)

Final notes of interest that may shed light on Sally's and Landon's ancestors:
  * Emeline named her first two daughters Lucy, after her grandmother, and Sarah, possible after her mother Sally. * Emeline and Martissa both named sons Sterling and Preston. * Emeline and Clementine both named daughters Genny or Geneva (Jenny) and Julia (a variation of Judith?) * None of the girls named sons after their father Landon S. GOWING. Could his middle name have been Sterling?
