Note: NONNENMACHER Meaning of Nonnenmacher: The literal meaning is "maker of celibates". It referred to one who castrated pigs for a living. Dictionary of American Family Names: Nonnenmacher means “hog castrator”. Castrating hogs was, no doubt, an honorable and profitable pursuit in the middle ages. A word about the literal meaning: Nonne means nun or priest, so we are literally "maker of celibates". The following is taken from Josef Karlmann Brechenmacher's book, 'Etymologisches Woerterbuch der Deutschen Familiennamen' (I'm giving a paraphrased translation here): "NONNENMACHER (a High German professional name) = 'Pig castrator' in Middle High German < 'nunne', 'nonne'= castrated pig, just as 'munch' means 'castrated Hengst ('male horse')..."
