Burgess of Marmet, formerly of Bloomingrose, W.Va., and Ripley, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at the Beverly Health Care Center, Glasgow, W.Va., after a long illness. She was born Oct. 7, 1908, at Boone County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Deck and Rosa Lee Pettry Toney. She was a member of the Healing Stream Baptist church, Seth, W.Va. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emil Stewart Burgess; three sons, Emil Lee Burgess, Gene Burgess, and Paul Burgess; a sister, Edith Roe; brothers, Robert, Wilburt, and Homer Toney; a granddaughter, Dianna Jones. Oretha is survived by two sisters, Grace Dial of N.M., and Betty Taylor of Ripley, W.Va.; grandsons, David E. Burgess of Hernshaw, W.Va., and Emil E. Burgess of Marmet; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and fourteen great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, W.Va., with the Rev. Phil Nicholas officiating. Interment will be at Burgess Cemetery, Bloomingrose, W.Va. Visitation will be two hours before the service.
