Note: Publication: The Charleston Gazette Published: Feb. 8, 2008 Headline: Ernestine Riley Ullum Ernestine Riley Ullum, 89, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, while visiting her son in Xiamen, China. She was born Dec. 30, 1918, in Charleston, to the late George Washington Jenkins and Elsa Irene (Riley) Jenkins. On Aug. 23, 1941, she married Howard Calvin Ullum, who preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Calvin Ullum and his wife, Mary Patricia; grandson, Thomas Calvin Ullum Jr.; great-granddaughter, Zoie Katrina Abel; sister, Helen Irene Bratt; and brother, George Washington Jenkins Jr. Mrs. Ullum is survived by daughter, Susan Elsa Gleason of Valparaiso, Ind.; son, John Stephen Ullum (Xue Yang) of Xiamen, China; two sisters, Frances VanCleve of Charleston, and Mary (William) Blevins of Willow Street, Pa.; ten grandchildren, Erica (Mark) Hickey, Jason (Anya) Abel, Jennifer (Shane) Leonard, Steven Abel, Timothy (Andrea) Ullum, John Stephen Ullum, Tracy (Chris) Jarnigan, Jill (Brian) Wise, Matthew Ullum and David Ullum; and ten great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ullum attended Marshall University, taught in a one-room school at Kanawha Two Mile, and later taught kindergarten for many years at Christ Church Methodist in Charleston. She won several awards for her leadership in 4-H, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend She was known for her love of family. She will be missed. Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday Feb. 9, at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home with Dr. Randall F. Flanagan officiating. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tommy Ullum Scholarship Fund, c/o Christian Family Chapel, 10365 Old St. Augustine Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257 or the Tim and Andrea Ullum ministry, c/o New Tribes Missions, 1000 E.
