  Publication: The Hawk Eye (Burlington, Iowa) Published: Sunday, April 20, 2008 Headline: Shirley Leaverton Shirley Jacqueline Leaverton, 80, of Fort Madison died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2008, at Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison. Born Dec. 13, 1927, in Ethel, Mo., she was the daughter of James and Mary Spiess Kuntz. On Oct. 29, 1960, she married LeRoy Leaverton in Palmyra, Mo. He died Aug. 15, 2007. Mrs. Leaverton worked as a payroll manager for the Chevron Corporation in Fort Madison for more than 30 years, retiring in 1992 as the controller. She sponsored a girl through Children International for years. She enjoyed animals, crocheting afghans, reading books and doing crossword puzzles. Survivors include three daughters, Melissa Freeman of Independence, Mo., Leigh Cullen of Fort Madison and Alice Woody of Aurora, Ill.; three sons, Jeffrey Creen of Fort Madison, Nathan Creen of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Matthew Leaverton of Madison, Wis.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter-in-law. The body has been cremated. The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Soldiers' Circle in Oakland Cemetery, with the Rev. Steve Rasmussen officiating. Memorials have been established for the American Lung Association and PAW Animal Shelter. King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory in Fort Madison is in charge of arrangements.
