Publication: The Charleston Gazette Published: May 14, 1985 Page: P1B Headline: Ansted Man Out On Bond After Standoff Byline: Andy Wessels Ansted - An Ansted man charged with five misdemeanors after a two-hour standoff with city, county and state police early Monday has been released on bond. Denny Edward Johnson, 58, allegedly fired a shotgun blast through the front door of a former employee's residence, then hid at the rear of his business on Main Street, Ansted, according to Municipal Judge Mamie Beneventi. Ansted police, four Fayette County deputies and two troopers from the state police detachment in Oak Hill surrounded the building, she said She said Johnson surrendered without incident at about 2:30 a.m. Monday Johnson was charged with two counts of assault, destruction of property, assault and battery and brandishing a weapon, Beneventi said. He was released Monday from the Fayette County Jail under a $1,000 property bond posted by his mother, she said. A hearing on the charges has been scheduled Friday. Beneventi said Johnson fired the single shotgun blast at the front door of the Virginia Brown residence on Cemetery Street, Ansted, shortly before midnight. She said it is not known what precipitated the incident. Brown was not injured. Johnson then apparently returned to his business - the Froggy Doggie, a combination meat market and video arcade on Main Street. Beneventi said Johnson lives at the rear of the business. The judge said no shots were fired after Johnson returned to his residence and police surrounded the building. She said Brown may obtain additional additional warrants through a Fayette County magistrate's office.

Johnson, 72, of Nallen, Nicholas County, died July 27, 1999, in Summersville Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Washington Gas Co. Surviving: sons, Robert of Lakewood, Colo., Richard of Leesburg, Va.; daughters, Denise Peck of Shrewsbury, Pa., Diane Ash of Buford, Ga.; father, Elmer Johnson of Ansted; brother, Roy of Ansted; five grandchildren. Memorial service will be held at a later date. White Funeral Home, Summersville, is in charge of arrangements.
