Notes
a. Note:   "He was a member of the Maine Medical Association and was considered an able and efficient physician and surgeon. Outside of his professional duties his interests were many and varied. He was the first Town Clerk of Wayne and held the office for many years. There may now be seen a large record book all in his handwriting. He was also the first postmaster, and long held the office. Many times he was of the board of selectmen, and he represented the town in the state legislature after Maine was "set off" from Massachusetts. He was a country magistrate, and for many years of the school committee. He was a member of the Congregational Church and by that denomination licensed to preach and often did preach in localities where there was no settled minister. He also was a popular public speaker." The following relating to the Wing brothers is taken from the "History of Wayne:" "When the brothers had difficulties to be adjusted or disputes to be settled they always chose Dr. Moses for umpire and abode by his decision ... some aged people remember well how in his wide country practice, Dr. Moses rode on horseback with the old time saddle-bags, and how he went on the off side of his horse to mount in order to swing his wooden leg over the horse's back." "A story is told of him as follows: His brother William was sick and discouraged and could not be roused from his despondency. Dr. Moses, while setting with his sick brother on the trunk of a tree which leaned from the bank far out over the Wing Pond, by a quick, dexterous movement of his foot tipped the unsuspecting brother over backward into the water. The involuntary plunge bath gave such a sudden shock to the invalid's nervous system that he experienced a speedy recovery from his illness. The salutary effect of such heroic treatment by an old school doctor was just about as miraculous as the faith cures and Christian Science healings of these later days." "He practiced his profession in Winthrop for a time. He was a member of the Congregational Church, and by recommendation of some aged ministers he preached to the destitute. He was much esteemed as a man, and did a large medical business for the times and place. He was many years town clerk. He wore a wooden leg. From a deed in our possession, it appears that Dr. Moses Wing at one time was a storekeeper at Wayne. One of the youngest of the seven was Moses, born in 1759, who as a lad of sixteen ran away from home to join the Continental Army. Not long thereafter in a battle he was severely wounded in the leg and ever after had to wear a wooden leg. In the army, he was a surgeon's helper. Later in life he became a physician and surgeon and practiced for many years. According to Emma Bartlett Chamberlain in the Owl, MAR 1903 p. 147 "There is a family tradition that he studied at Harvard, but I am not able to prove it." "Bath, 6th July, 1785. Witness: Moses Wing a Physician of a Plantation called New Sandwich has this Day offered himself to some of the Ministers of the Gospel in this Vicinity for their License to preach the Gospel, and hath exhibited before them a Sermon, and passed under Examination. We whose Names are hereunto affixed, do hereby advise the said Mr. Wing to exercise his Gift in a public Way. He hat our Approbation, and were hereby recommend him to the Savior of Christ in any Place where God in his Providence may offer a Door for him. SAMUEL EATON, FRANCIS WINTER, THOMAS MOORE."
