  1. Gruffydd ap Cynan, king of Gwynedd [northern Wales], born ca. 1055 probably in Dublin, Ireland, son of the exile Cynan ap Iago and his wife Ragnaillt or Ragnhild, daughter of Olaf Sigtryggsson of Dublin. He returned twice to fight for his rights in Gwynedd, succeeded with the help of Rhys ap Tewdwr [Tudor] in 1081. He had a mixed career (he spent much of the period 1082-1094 in an English prison, and again driven into exile ca. 1098/1099], but he did reestablish his family in Gwynedd. Amongst others, he was the great-grandfather of Llywelyn Fawr, or the Great, prince of Wales (d. 1240).
