Note: James Claypoole (ii) and Elizabeth Pawling James Claypoole was born June 12, 1664 in London, England and died before July 24, 1706. His parents were James Claypoole (b: 8 OCT 1634 in Nortrhborough, Northamptonshire, England) and Helena Mercer (b: 19 Aug 1638 in London, England.) He married (first) Mary Cann (b. 1664 in Scots Yard, London, England) in 1688 in Lewes, Sussex Co., Delaware. He married (second) Elizabeth Pawling (b: 1669 in Lewes, Sussex Co., Delaware) in 1696 in Lewes, Sussex Co., Delaware. To this union were born: --- Elizabeth Claypoole b: 1697 in Lewes, Sussex Co., Delaware; who married William Pettyjohn --- James Claypoole b: 15 Feb 1701 in Newcastle, Delaware --- (son) Claypoole b: 1702 in Lewes, Sussex Co., Delaware James Claypoole was appointed clerk of the court in Newcastle, Delaware in 1690. He had built an Inn known as the Old Gilpin House before 1700. James Claypoole, as son-in-law of John Cann, Esq., was appointed to administer the estate of his wife's late father, which included a house and lot in Newcastle, materials on dock and a plantation on White Clay Creek. He was listed in the Delaware Archives as attorney (1685); Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas (1692, 1693, 1696, 1698, 1699, 1700, 1701); Surveyor (1686, 1687, 1705); on October 22, 1695 James & Mary his wife were among those named in the will of Mary Williams, each given a gold ring. (Archives: Dover, Del. Will B. 1, p. 33). James (who had formerly been a Quaker) was baptized by Rev. George Keith on July 31, 1703. His 3 children had been baptized by the Rev. George Keith on April 11, 1702. After the death of James, his widow Mary was wed to Christian Steelman. James died sometime prior to 24 JUL 1706 in Newcastle, Delaware.
