Note: !Esther (Wilcox) James was the third wife of Edward Shippen. She was, like him, a Quaker. She outlived her husband and died in August, 1724, some twelve years after her husband. Edward Shippen was in his political career mayor of Philadelphia, a judge, acting governor and treasurer of Pennsylvania and occupied several seats in the Assembly, including speaker. They lived in the "great house" located at Second and Spruce streets, not far from the Independence Hall of the Revolutionary War era. The great garden on the grounds was mentioned often in the newspapers and books of the time.
