a. Note:   From FindAGrave.com Martin Coffman Birth: Aug. 13, 1813, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA Death: Jun. 24, 1848. Decatur. Adams County. Indiana, USA Was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, August 13, 1813, and removed to Adams county, Ia., some five years ago. Bro. Coffman embraced religion and joined the United Brethren Church when about 17 years of age; of which Church he remained an acceptable and useful member until his death, which took place at his residence in Decatur, Adams county, Indiana, on the 24th day of June, 1848, at the age of 34 years, 10 months and 11 days. His illness was of but short duration, and he died, as he had lived�a firm and consistent Christian. He has left a wife and six children to mourn their irreparable loss. "Thou art gone to the grave, but we will not deplore thee, Though sorrows and darkness encompass the tomb; The Savior has pass'd thro' its portals before thee, And the lamp of his love is thy guide thro' the gloom." A large monument in the cemetery has the inscription: "Record of Steele Cemetery Martin Coffman deeded to James Russell, Wm. Brown, Gideon Billman (trustees) on Jan. 10, 1846 Sec. 14, Twp. 27, Range 13. 1/2 acre Signed Samuel L. Rugg, Recorder From intro in Plesant Dale Cemetery Association booklet of Articles of Association, By-Laws, & Rules, published 1944: "January 10, 1846, nearly 100 yuears ago, the pioneer citizens residing in Kirland Township and vicinity, selected as a burial place for the departed dead of the community, a beautiful shady plot in the forest on the Coffman farm (known today as the Zimmerman homestead). The original one-half acre of land was purchased for a burial ground for the sum of $2.00, deeded January 10, 1846 by Martin Coffman to James Russel, William Brown and Gideon Billman -- Trustees of the Steele Cemetery (Later changed to Pleasant Dale Cemetery). From Adams Co, IN Estate Records Martin Coffman Jr. (d. 1848) leaves 2 minor children (listed in May 1849) Wilson S. age 1 yr and 10 months and Susanna G. as 3 years and 11 months; widow Nancy Coffman; Administrator is brother David L. Coffman
