Note: I have been able to find in the Minutes of Moray House. It's mainly formal material, but I hope it will be of interest to Sally. I have sent this email as a copy to her as well. BIOGRAPHY: The earliest references are to Minues of the the then Edinburgh Provincial Committee (EPC) which was responsible after 1907 for teacher training in 'Moray House'. Later Moray house College of Education came into being with its own Board of Governors. BIOGRAPHY: 6 October 1920 "...it was prposed to appoint Mr J (?) P MacGregor from the office of the Director of Studies at the Glasgow Training Centre to the post of second clerk in the office of the Director of Studies in Edinburgh...Mr MacGregor to be paid at the rate of 300 per annum." BIOGRAPHY: [At this time the college administration was headed by a Chief Clerk and Cashier. There appears to be some debate between EPC and the Central Executive Committee on the number and remuneration of administrative and clerical staff.] BIOGRAPHY: 16 March 1921 The Salaries of Administrative staff were fixed by the Central Executive Committee: "...Second Clerk, Mr J.P.MacGregor, 11 years of service, present salary 300, proposed scale 220 - 400, proposed salary 400." BIOGRAPHY: 1 November 1939 It was agreed to recommend that Mr I P MacGregor succeed the retiring Chief Clerk (on 1 April 1940) and on a salary scale of 400 to 500, starting at 400 pa. This recommendation was agreed by the CEC in December. BIOGRAPHY: 6 November 1940 It was noted that Mr MacGregor had done much of the work of his original post and his new post "alone under great difficulties". BIOGRAPHY: [This reflects the impact of World War II and other staff requiring to take military service]. BIOGRAPHY: 17 November 1948 "Careful consideration was given to the amount of work devolving on Mr MacGregor, and appreciation was expressed of his excellent services." It was noted that he had been in the training colleges service for 39 years. BIOGRAPHY: 16 February 1949 He was a member of a Sub-Committee set up to look at ways of improving the garden of the college's Nursery School. Later this group looked at other college gardens. BIOGRAPHY: His salary had risen to 710 pa. BIOGRAPHY: 26 May 1948 He received an honorarium of 50 for 1947/8 in respect of his additional work under the Emergency Scheme [which dealt with the recruitment of teachers from the armed forces etc after the War] BIOGRAPHY: 24 May 1950 He was reappointed to the Board of Management of the Edinburgh University Vacation Courses as Honorary Secretary. BIOGRAPHY: 20 May 1953 It was recorded that he was absent on medical certificated grounds from 1 August 1952 to 31 March 1953. BIOGRAPHY: 19 June 1957 His "...able and devoted service" was noted. BIOGRAPHY: 19 November 1958 Even 'though he had reached retirement age of 65 it was agreed that he should continue for a further year because of his "wide experience" and against the background of a major reorganisation of Moray House. BIOGRAPHY: He reached 50 years of service on 18 July 1959. BIOGRAPHY: 23 June 1959 "Mr Ian P MacGregor, Chief Clerk to the Governors [of Moray House College of Education] retiral on 312 July 1959." BIOGRAPHY: Item XXVIII. Retirement of Mr MacGregor, Chief Clerk. - BIOGRAPHY: The Principal paid tribute to the devoted service of Mr I.P.MacGregor, Chief Clerk, who was due to retire on 31st July after fifty years' service. He had the interest of the College at heart and had been of the utmost help to successive Principals. Dr Inglis [Principal] expressed his regret at the parting. The Chairman [of the Governors] associated himself with the observations of the Principal and conveyed to Mr MacGregor the thanks of the governors for his devoted service. BIOGRAPHY: Mr MacGregor in his reply expressed his thanks for the appreciation of his services and stated that he had been happy to enjoy the confidence of the governors and of their predecessors in office." BIOGRAPHY: [During the War 1943/4 he was responsible for some 14 staff. This had reduced after the War in 1945/6 to 7, but with the expansion of the college this had increased to 17 during 1958/8.] BIOGRAPHY: I hope the above gives a flavour of Mr MacGregor's work at Moray House. Unfortunately, the Archive doesn't have records from this time of a more informal nature - just the formal ones!
