Notes
a. Note:   d the famous "Model Farm of Missouri."
T.W. or "Will" as he was known, had purchased the Thralls Prairie farm from a Mr. Heidy, paying $45 an acre for the famous site. It had been named the premium farm of the state in 1873 by the St. Louis Agricultural and Mechanical Association, after Rocheport merchant and banker John Woods Harris had devoted some twenty years and a sizeable fortune to make a country showplace.
The rich farmland was abundant with trees and berries planted by prior residents. Spacious vegetable gardens provided for the large Gardner family. The farm crops provided food for themselves and their livestock, and the excess, sold for a profit, would allow them to purchase things they could not raise or make. The crops included 100 to 125 acres of corn, 80 acres of wheat and 40 acres of oats
Will's wife Elizabeth died at the home in 1922 of heart disease. When John Wilbert lost his nearby farm in 1929 due to depressed farm prices, his family moved from their house to Will's farm and the Model farm was divided amoung Will's sons. John died of pneumonia in 1937. The house burned at Christmas of 1939.
Note:   Born in Delphi IN, Thomas Wilbert Gardner grew up in IL near Maroa, where he met and married Elizabeth Berkler at the Methodist Church they attended. They farmed near Oreana before moving their family to Boone County MO where they purchase
