Note: 1900 Census, Jasper Twp., Dallas Co., MO doesn't list Leroy which indicates he left home before this Census. He doesn't appear on any census I've seen before 1910 in Wewoka, OK. It is believed he got in trouble because he changed the surname spelling from CHASTEEN to CHASTAIN. Aunt Dovey said he was married before and had two children -- Sarah and John. "They both had bright red hair and blue eyes." She recalls they were living in MO. It is more likely they lived in AR as Leroy was purportedly working in the woods on "Petty Jane"/Petite Jean Mountain. "Daddy was workin' in the woods. He said he would come home every day and find the house and his children filthy and his wife would be asleep. One day he came in, cleaned up his children and kissed 'em good bye, never to see 'em again." Aunt Dovey said, "I loved mama and daddy. Daddy'd make corncob dolls for us. See, we didn't have no money in them days. Mama'd make dresses for the dolls. He'd also make whistles out of sticks." Leroy & Rendy lived on Stark Road in Segoville, TX until her death, then Leroy moved in with his daughter Veldon and her husband Joe until Leroy's death. Before he died, Leroy was very angry at Rendy. He made everyone promise that they would not bury him with his wife. No one seems to know what this was all about, but I would guess that he was angry that she died before him and left him all alone. _____________________________________________________ "Services held today for Leroy Chastain" Funeral services for Leroy Chastain, 85, will be held at 2 p.m. today in William D.
