Note: According to Jerri Chasteen (no apparent relationship), ". . .William died in 1856 intestate (no will) -- but Mahala [William's wife] and Comodore White (next door neighbor in 1860) were appointed administrators over his estate in Laclede County . . . .Mahala and her three sons; John (age 7), Elijah (age 6) and William (age 5), are shown on the 1860 Laclede census, living not far from (obviously) her deceased husband's brother; John Chasteen. Mahala "Casteen" is then shown on the 1870 Dallas Co. census -- with the three boys and two other children; Lee Grant (age 4) and Louisa (age 3). The other Chasteens who are shown on the 1860 census; John (born 1826, KY); Robert (born 1827, IN); both of their wives and the children who were born between 1847 to 1857, were born in Indiana -- the same as Mahala. This should tell you when the Chasteens left KY and went to Indiana, then from Indiana into Missouri. You should be able to find John and Mary A. on the 1850 Indiana census, with a 3-year-old son named George -- and a 1-year-old daughter named Alsada. "They were following a VERY standard migration pattern;" Jerri continues, "most families coming from VA into KY (to take up Rev [Revolutionary] War Bounty land), then their children going into Indiana (when the Piankashaw, Miami, Wea and Shawnee Indians were removed to Kansas), then into MO to homestead that land." From the book, "Little Otter to Lost River," Page 208: "3. WILLIAM CHASTAIN was born in Kentucky circa 1824 and died in Laclede County, Missouri. He was married first in Washington County, Indiana on September 18, 1844, to REBECCA CHASTAIN, daughter of FLEMMING and SUSANNAH TONEY CHASTAIN. REBECCA evidently died in late 1850 or early 1851 as WILLIAM was remarried in Martin County, Indiana, on December 17, 1851, to MAHALA PULSE. She was the daughter of GEORGE and MARY PULSE. WILLIAM CHASTAIN and his first wife, REBECCA, lived in Baker Township, Martin County, Indiana in 1850 with children named GEORGE and SARAH M. In the settlement of the estate of BARNETT CHASTAIN SR (grandfather of REBECCA), in Washington County, Indiana, in 1857, BARNETT JR, swore to the court that REBECCA was dead leaving two unknown heirs who were not residents of the State of Indiana. WILLIAM H. CHASTAIN and wife, MAHALA, sold land in Martin County, Indiana, on Apr 13, 1852, and removed to Laclede County, Missouri. In an Estate Book in Laclede County, dated November 18, 1856, I found that on that date MAHALA CHASTAIN and CAMEDON WHITE were appointed administrators of WILLIAM CHASTAIN, deceased, late of Laclede County, "who died intestate having property in this state which may be lost, destroyed or diminished in value if speedy care is not taken of same." Just what this property was I do not know as I was unable to find a record of it in Laclede County. It could have been in adjoining Dallas County as I did not get to check the records of this county. MAHALA CHASTAIN had moved to Jasper Township, Dallas County, Missouri, before 1870 and was still living there in 1880. Living with her in 1870 were the two youngest children of JOHN and MARY ANN PULSE CHASTAIN." RC On the 1850 Federal Census, Martin Co, Baker Twp, IN, William is listed as Wm. CHASTINE with wife Rebecca and the following individuals in the household: George W., 4; Sarah M., 1; Perlina FRANKLIN, 19; and Pleasant E. FRANKLIN, 5/12. RC Name variants: 1850 census shows spelling CHASTINE; Indiana State Library source has spelling CHASTINE; Laclede Co, MO probate book has spelling CHASTIEN; 1860 Laclede Co, MO census has spelling CASTEEN.
