a. Note:   "Ed" went to work at about age 14, having gone to school only through the 8th grade. He worked for many years for the Chicago Alton Railroad, and was known for his accuracy with figures. Perhaps because he began work at such an early age, he always told his children to stay in school and put off going to work -- because once you start working, you never can stop.
  When the headquarters of the Chicago Alton Railroad was moved, Ed was given the chance to move to Oklahoma to continue his work with the railroad. However, he had no desire to leave Bloomington where he had lived his entire life, and thus left the railroad, taking a job at Eureka Williams Vacuum Cleaner Company.
