a. Note:   Jeremiah's obituary states that during the Civil War he served with the New York Militia on a transport ship on the coast and "was on the Illinois when she was being chased by the Confederate Ship ______." The name of this ship, unfortunately, is not legible.
  Jeremiah and Bridget may have been in Bloomington, IL, as early as 1870, for Jeremiah's obituary states that in that year he helped install the clock in the court house building in Bloomington (which burned in 1900). By 1872 he is certainly there, for he is listed in the Bloomington City Directory beginning with the 1872-73 edition.
  Earlier census records give his name as "McCarty."
