a. Note:   Edward was living at Fort Mims when the massacre took place. He managed to escape hiding for three days in the swamp. On the
 fourth day he arrived at Mount Vernon. He had been wounded in
 the hand but managed to swim the Alabama River carryingwith him
 his rifle and Bowie Knife between his teeth. He swam along the
 cut-off to the Tombigbee reaching Mt Vernon. His knife is now in
 the possession of the Alabama Archives and History dept. ,in
 Montgomery. His grandaughter presented the knife to the State
 Dept, of Archives.
