Notes
a. Note:   Joseph Johnson learned the shoemaking trade with his half-brother, Thomas Willliams, serving as an apprentice for seven years, but he preferred the more active life of boating and fishing, which became his chief ocupation. He skippered fishing boats with his brother Caleb. They were both remarkable seamen. Joseph apparently moved to Lynn for four years, from 1798 to 1802, but then returned to Nahant and shared the family homestead with his brother Caleb, after the death of their father, Jonathan.
Built the fourth house, a hotel, on the westward side of Nahant in 1800. On Sunday, August 28, 1803, at one o'clock in the morning, this house was destroyed by fire with no loss of life.
