Note: Merril was drafted into the military July 24, 1943 in Spokane, Washington. He was in the Navy, Artillery. His division was Armed Guard, Company B. He was 2nd Class Bosin Maid. He spent 6 months in San Diego, California. He then went on a Troop Ship taking marine soldiers overseas. He was discharged December 14, 1945 in Bremerton, Washington. He also was in the Navel Reserves.
Merril loved working with his hands. He painted oil paintings. He made grandfather clocks and he could play the armonica.
