Note: Elam D. Fairchild---Born January 12, 1845, in Hancock County, Ohio, and was the fourth child of Action and Harriet (Day) Fairchild, natives of Ohio, and of English descent. Moved to this county (Village) with his parents in Spring of 1866, and located in township where he continued to live. In 1862, he enlisted in Co. D-Twenty-first (21st) Infantry Regiment. he fought in several hard contested battles, such as; Chickamouga, Jonesboro, Atlanta and Bentonvillle. He was not wounded. He was mustered out with martial honors in the summer of 1865. Married Effie Garis on March 18, 1869. This union was fruitful by five (5) children: Nina, deceased, Ethie, Ruth, Harriet and Susan. Mr. Fairchild was a solid Republican and was elected Justice of the Peace in 1876. He was re-elected in 1880. Elam Fairchild was a farmer and cattle dealer, but has taught several terms of school. To the small help he received from his father, he has continued to add to his land until now he has 450 acres of excellent and well improved land. He died January 6, 1886.
