  DANIEL McDOWELL, an aged resident of Langlade County, died at his home in Dobbston Wednesday last, January 10th, after an illness of about a year. Mr. McDowell was born at Trent's Hills, Stark County, Ohio, June 1st, 1822, and engaged at an early age in work on the Erie Canal, where he remained for some years. Later he took up the occupation of an engineer on the St. Clair River, and followed this occupation for many years, finally in 1870, moving to Wisconsin where he has since made his home. His last work as an engineer was on the steamer Maud Spencer, running between Schemo Bay and Desler on Lake Ontario. He possessed a first grade certificate, received from Alfred Baley and John E. Lee, Inspectors of engineers at Oswego, New York, and was rated one of the best on the lakes. The deceased was a member of Shawano Lodge No. 243, I. O. O. F., and his remains were buried in this city Friday afternoon last with all due honors by the members of the order. An aged wife and 4 daughters survive him, as follows; Mrs. Alice Wheeler and Mrs. A. J. Wood of Dobbston, Mrs. A. C. Decatur of Cleveland, Ohio and Mrs. W.F. Purdy of Buffalo, New York.
