William enlisted into the service of the Civil War on August 8, 17, 1862 as a Private. He mustered in November 4, 1862 into Co. K Iowa, 38th infantry then transferred into Co. I Iowa 34th infantry on January 1, 1865. He was mustered out August 15, 1865 in Houston, Texas.
