MALCOLM LUDVIG CAVALLIN, born in 1847 in Skeda parish, Östergötland, and the son of Carl J. Cavallin, a farmer, and his wife, Karin, grew up in Linköping where he learned the trade of a tanner at an early age. As early as 1869, Mr. Cavallin went to this country and chose St. Joe, Mich. as his first location. He first worked for the railroad that was built to that city.
In 1877 Mr. Cavallin married Kristina Beata Larson, born in Hjo in Västergötland, from where she came to Iowa with her parents in the early years. The couple has seven children: Ellen, Gustaf, John, Oscar, Mabel, Guy and Malcolm. One son is dead. Four of the children are married and living in Texas. Mrs. Cavallin died in Olivia in 1909 after a few years in that community. The family lived in Wayne, Kansas for fifteen years and Mr. Cavallin was a farmer. From there they moved to Olivia, Texas, in 1892, during the early years of the settlement. The family has lived there ever since, the children have grown up there and gone to school. The Cavallin's property, of 480 acres, is located on the eastern shore of the island by the beautiful Carancahua Bay with a view over Palacios across the sound. During the years that Mr. Cavallin has lived in this area he has been a leader and has made an important contribution to the development of the community. He has had an opportunity to serve the community in many ways and has not shirked his duties and responsibilities. He has held positions of trust and has served as County Commissioner for twenty-two years and school trustee for twenty-four. His contributions are gratefully acknowledged by the community.
