Note: Austin was a member of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. In 1928 he participated in the Olympics at specializing in the free stroke. He swam in the 1500 meters, 400 meters (finishing 4th) and in the 4 x 200 relay (the team placed first).
In 1932 Austin and the American water polo team placed third at the Los Angeles Olympics. In 1936 the team placed 9th in the Berlin Olympics. At the London Olympics the water polo team placed 11th although Austin was the coach.
