Note: Swore the oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on July 4, 1778 in Northampton County (An Alphabetized Listing of those Subscribers to the Oaths of Allegiance, Northampton County, PA 1777-1784). A Schnell descendent, Terry Snyder, traces the family back to 1725 in Rhode Island, where Terry thinks Joseph and probably his parents came in from Germany. The family moved into the Philadelphia area, and around 1750 the two brothers, John and Jacob, came towards York County. This information is based on the memoirs of Wiley F. Snell, dated 1937. I have included information assuming that Jacob and John were brothers; this assumption is based on the fact that Wiley F. Snell, in his memoirs, noted that John had a brother who moved "to a northern county." The IGI for Germany lists a possible Josephus Schnell, who was christened on Dec. 31, 1721 at Sankt Martinus Katholisch, Sontheim, Neckarkreis, Wuerttemberg.
