Note: Church records from Northampton County reveal a somewhat confusing set of births to a Samuel and Elizabeth (not Susanna) Snell. Wackernagel's "Church Record of the Evangelical-Lutheran and Reformed Congregation at Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County" lists an abraham Snell, born Sept. 11, 1824, baptized Oct. 17, 1824, parents Samuel Schmell and Elizabeth (this seems to match one of the children I already have listed for Samuel); William, born Dec. 16, 1826, baptized April 1, 1827, parents Samuel Schenel and Elizabeth; Philip, born May 8, 1820 and baptized June 19, 1820, to Samuel and Elizabeth Schnell - the sponsors in this case were George and Elizabeth Snell. These may or may not be my Snells. In addition to the 1810 listing in Athens, there is a listing in Montgomery County, Pottsgrove, for Samuel Snell in 1810. In his household were one male less than 10, one male 10-16, one male 16-26, and one male 26-45, one female less than 10, and one female 16-26. My Samuel would have been 28 at this time, and Susanna 16. In 1820 there was a Samuel Snell in Mont. County, Potts Gr. (p. 108). In his household were three males less than 10, one male 10-16, 1 male over 45, one female 10-16, one female over 45. These ages do not seem to line up exactly, since Susanna van Loon Snell would have been 26, and Samuel 38 at this time. Having received information from WFT v. 15, tree 2745, it now appears that these Snells, including the Montgomery County Samuel Snell, are descendants of Johannes George Snell, who was born in Germany in 1746, indentured in Philadelphia in 1771. See copy of this tree in Snell notebook. The 1850 Census for Franklin Township, Luzerne County (p. 104) shows Samuel Snell (63), farmer, living with Susannah (49), Abram (24), Rebecca (22), Samuel (19), Phebe (11), Thomas H. (8), and Winfield (4). All had been born in Pennsylvania. The 1860 census for Franklin Township (p. 169) shows Samuel (70), this time listed as having been born in New York, living in the household of Samuel Snell (27) and his wife, Frances (47). Winfield (15) was also living with them.
